Introduction
On this day last year (January 12, 2008), me and my brother started the Blood Wiki. I am not sure why we started it in the first place to be honest. Part of it was how much Blood I was playing at the time, and this was before I had access to a computer that could play Blood II. Part of it may have been to give me something to do during the cold temperatures (I remember in the early days of the wiki we were documenting the Blood fan fiction when it was around -30 Celsius outside). Part of it is that I thought the Blood community needed it. Over the last ten years or so the community has amassed a huge amount of data for us to read through, play through, and document. Now hopefully thanks to our efforts, a Bloodite can find out about the world of Blood by just a few searches through our wiki. Though the main reason was that it was fun to make, and is still fun to make. Thus with this spirit I hope that this year might even be more profitable than the last. Happy Bloodletting! - Tchernobog 15:57, 12 January 2009 (EST)

Bloodite Comments
"I'm very impressed with the detail and thoroughness of it. I'm learning things about Blood that I never knew existed." - Eric Juneau, Fan Fiction Writer.

"I salute you guy's efforts of gathering every small info about Blood" - Dávid Pethõ, Fan Artist

"I must say, you have done a great job with it! Nice work!" - Joe Volante, Modder

"The Blood Wiki is now functioning at a level that almost replaces everything Planet Blood used to do. I hope you folks can keep it going." - ZZaRDoZz, Bloodite at large.

"Wow, nice going on the wiki!" - RedFanatic, Modder

"It's good to be around people I can relate to. I will try to send all the support I can for this young wiki." - Mark Anthony Schaller, Wiki Contributor.

Cerberus's Message
The first year of the Blood Wiki has been quite the year for changes. We have grown to have:

"1,135 total pages in the database. This includes "talk" pages, pages about [the Blood Wiki],
minimal "stub" pages, redirects, and others that probably don't qualify as content pages.
Excluding those, there are 308 pages that are probably legitimate content pages. 598
files have been uploaded."
From the Special:Statistics page.

From a simple layout with a main page that just links to the handful of articles present we now have gone through three major rewrites of its layout. The category structure has gone through major revision where "link pages" have been converted to categories, and then the categories were "simplified". Most recently new templates have been added for infoboxes, and those infoboxes have been added to the games and enemies articles. If it rate of growth and change continues the Blood Wiki will become THE main source for all things bloody, perhaps even noteworthy enough for a mention in Wikipedia, though that may be a bit ambitious. Here's to a successful second year!

Thanks
I would like to thank some of the people who helped make the wiki what it is today:

Thanks to TheWallflower for his massive amount of edits, giving us the honour of being a host for Blood 2: The Unforgiven, and his "differences of opinion" which helped the wiki have more view points than just those of the management.

Thanks to Drudge Master for being one of the first people to give us encouraging words and a helping hand during the relatively early days of the wiki.

Thanks to Dávid Pethõ (Final Caleb) for answering our hopes that there was another Bloodite out there with a taste for archiving and had significantly more experience in the community than we did.

With regards to the Shogo Sub-Section, I would like to thank Hlingler and Thetargos from the Fedora Forum for helping me set up the game and for Thetargos's minor contribution to the "Shogo Guides" article.

Thanks to everyone who has made a contribution or has said an encouraging word.

And a final thanks to all those who are reading the Blood Wiki and its contents!
Hypertension appears to be the one project aiming to add content to the Blood
universe in some time. With new characters, game-play and backstory, your EDGE
based shooter promises to open up the world of Blood. Give your fellow
Bloodites all you are willing to reveal about Hypertension.

Corbin: Well, first of all,
Hypertension is, in itself, a remake of Blood. We wanted to take these ideas we
felt were half-fleshed out in Blood II and combine them into one game -
Hypertension. The differences from Blood itself are there - more modernized
gameplay, more opportunity to scare the player with intense lighting, graphic
novels...just to name a few things that we've done. We wanted to turn Blood's
weak storyline into something that's worthy. The biggest gripe in games today is
that there is no connection with two or more characters. Blood was never a
romantic game but the romance will definitely be there, especially in Caleb's
scenario. How would you feel if you lost a loved one that was murdered right in
front of you? There are several emotions involved that the two characters will
have to learn to deal with. And this game will be very scary. I felt that, while
Blood did the job, it didn't scare gamers. Hypertension should change that. On
top of a new atmosphere, it should really refresh people and hopefully show them
what Blood could’ve been. Of course, you have the 3d models, dynamic music
system, dynamic lighting, so it’s a different ballgame this time around. We have
more room to play around in. Also, while we cherish Caleb’s original image, we
might change it to fit our budget, since a lot of material is going to be
scanned and digitized into the game. Since I will most likely play Caleb in the
live-action shots, most of the dialogue will be changed around to fit my voice,
as well as his image. Don’t worry – we’re still going for a grungy look but
obviously, both Caleb and Ophelia will have to be slightly younger.
Didn't you say she could raise the dog back to life at one point? Maybe she
realizes what can be done for the dog can be done for people too (Herself?

Corbin: Well Aurelia was decided very early on in
development because I wanted a sort of pseudo-love story. Aurelia is a quirky 21
year old girl who lives in the present time, and works at a magic shop. She
moves out of her parent’s house into a house with her roommates, and it’s an
old, formerly abandoned piece of crap…that’s across the street from the funeral
parlor (remake of E1M1 from Blood). Since she picks up an old lock-necklace from
her shop, spirits began tormenting her and her roommates. They soon use their
knowledge to find out that it’s coming from the funeral parlor. Something’s
trying to keep them away so they’re like “Well, why not, let’s go check it out.”
In doing so, they open up Caleb’s old tomb, and in doing so, awaken him from the
past. He feels Ophelia’s presence, but it’s not her (the lock piece was hers
that Caleb gave her). Then both of their stories begin. The dog was added in
later as a tribute to Sheik, who passed away some time ago. I just rewrote some
old Boom/MBF code and stuck him in, and he’s pretty handy. I’m scripting some
code that will enable the dog to “see” spirits and other abominations. Most of
the time, she will be left defenseless so the dog will have to pick up the
slack. You won’t do actual fighting until Blood II rolls around. So it’ll be an
interesting change of pace, and since it’s unrealistic for Ophelia to just “come
back to life”, Aurelia should provide enough interest to weigh the game as it
goes on.
something of a side-project of mine, making non-commercial games with a team of
people. What we do is go to colleges, expos, anything we can and spread the
word. Most of the kids we have on the team have never taken an interest in game
design before: they were just regular artists, mathematicians, etc. It's when
you can show them the possibility that you can craft something out of normal
knowledge and really expand from there. I got really involved with it after
seeing some of the stuff the Quake community was putting out, and from there I
was especially tempting to do so given the large amounts of unused art assets
and unfinished code waiting for someone to find it and pick up where the
developers left off. The plain english text-editing and simple graphical work
made the game much more memorable than perhaps it deserved to be, but if you ask
me, an open mind to the modding communities makes for an excellent selling
feature of any game. Since then, I've been casually cracking open many different
Corbin: Anime is a very strong medium for us, and for me it was one of
the best ways I can convey Caleb's loss. Since most Anime is based around love,
and the loss of said love, you can really play with that. You can use emotions
in art styles, in voice samples, because people expect that in an Anime. Very
rarely is there an anime that exists without romance. A strong example would be
Yu Yu Hakusho, one of my favorite. In that, you have a kid who struggles with
right and wrong. He's bigheaded, but you see him evolve into a rather formidable
fighter, and all the while, he's confused about his relationship with his girl.
Anime's have a way of showing character development that I haven't seen in other
genre's as of late. I figured, we can redraw Blood's style to include obvious
Anime influences. I used to not be into anime, and I’m still not, but it’s a
strong way of expressing something. And, of course, there's the graphic novel
despite Japan's persistence of flat-chestedness. At any rate, the anime that I
have given more than a few minutes attention has uniformly been enjoyable. Like
I said though, I don't watch many, but I've seen such titles as Evangelion,
Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell, and like the product of anyone else's honest
depth, Please extrapolate on this in regards to Hypertension. Why is she doing
this? Did something happen to her during the investigation of the house or in
her own past?

Corbin: Well
originally we were going to have Aurelia move in with her boyfriend, and then he
gets kidnapped by a new occult (CabalCo) and is sacrificed. So that would have
consequently put her into the storyline. That would’ve been fine, but since I
wanted to do the two character thing, it wasn’t going to work out. If I’m going
to put two characters into a game, they are going to feel, look, and act
completely different. So I redesigned her into a younger, punk mage in order to
slide her into the universe. She will realize that an evil force is trying to
kill her, and then kills her friends. It’s up to her and her Dog to exorcise the
spirits. In doing so, she unlocks the barrier between her and Caleb, the rest is
left to the player.

Corbin: Well, EDGE is itself based
upon the DOOM Source Code (nothing to do with Doomsday, which is a separate
port). I've been using EDGE for years, and the last Doom modification my team
put out (then we were called The Doom Gods) was a critical failure, and I exited
the community for quite sometime. I sat back and learned everything I needed to
know - modeling, artwork, music making, and I took all of those and applied it
into my knowledge of the EDGE engine. I separate it from "DOOM port" because
it's more than that, and once we're completed you will not need the Doom WAD to
play it. Our community isn't big, and we're having slight problems, but I've
been with it since the beginning. I'm really hoping Hypertension restarts
interest in the port. Most projects, admittedly, are only there to expand the
Doom universe (weapons or otherwise). Ours is restarting one and, as such, will
not play or act like Doom at all. It's a very fine process of turning such an
engine into a more advanced one. Zdoom has an amazing renderer -- which I wish
was in EDGE, as well as PolyObj support and rotating sectors. Zdoom also has a
slight upper-hand in scripting power, but I'm making up for that with EDGE's
powerful modability. For instance, weapon mods for Doom for EDGE were available
for years before Legacy or Zdoom caught up with it. Just because something is
less flashy or slightly less powerful doesn't mean it can be more useful. That's
where the creativity factor really comes into play. You have to use your brain,
twist and tug, to get the results you want. It's quite stimulating at times.
Vis: EDGE is another engine that's incredibly easy to modify, with
few limitations, most of which can be worked around with some clever problem
solving and the liberal use of caffeine. As well, when tech support is desired,
the EDGE community is very eager to help out, or maybe just bored and listless.
In any event, the choice to use EDGE over anything else is largely due to
sentimental value to a certain someone in the project team.

Pina: Edge runs better and a lot clearer on how to use things
when it came out. I thought it was a pretty fun game but that's just because I
was a fan. I recently started going back and playing it and I think Monolith
should've waited another year to release the game. Clearly, Lithtech wasn't
finished when they released it. It's in my retrospect to offer that 1.0 of that
engine is really unrefined and probably should not be used. As a matter of fact,
since they refined the engine in NOLF and FEAR it would make more sense to
rebuild based on one of those platforms, where more features and bugfixes would
be available. I know I'm using a really outdated technology but there's so much
I can do with it that I'm not at all worried. Lithtech obviously has problems
and it was one of the reasons Blood II wasn't received well. Either fix those
bugs or move onto a more popular variant of the technology, where you can say,
"Hey, rebuilding Blood II with NOLF . . . or even FEAR". That would get more

Corbin: It’s interesting to hear this question because Blood2 is
going to be handled within the first Hypertension. We have a second half of the
well, thus eliminating plot holes, adding in characters and making it more
immersive. Blood2 was very campy but Hypertension will change most of the second
game into a living, scary world. So, now that we got Blood2 taken care of, the
true sequel to Hypertension can be mostly original, and might or might not
follow Caleb into the new century. We have a couple of ideas but nothing is
certain right now. Hypertension 2 will most likely use a more mature tech, like
Quake or even PsyTech. It just all depends on where this first game goes. If
*From the train wreckage where you start, there are three fires burning on an overturned train car. Go through the flames and you'll find a small stash. Reward: Dynamite bundles, body armor, box of shells
*When you reach the bridge to the ticket booth, jump in the water. Swim under the building and rise to the surface. (Beware of the Fanatics, who make reaching this secret costly). Reward: Flare gun, shotgun, Tommy gun, guns akimbo
*At the shooting gallery, shoot the targets to receive a prize. (Hint: you don't need to use a gun) Reward: Life seed
*Opposite the "Rotten Candy" wagon is a fence. Jump over it to find the secret. (Hint: You can find Jump Boots on top of the "Rotten Candy" wagon, or use living platforms to jump on the fence.) Reward: Beastvision
*At the "Kick the Head" game, kick a zombie head into the mouth to win a prize. (Hint: Be careful of too many kicks, because the heads do squish. Save your game before trying this. Try to slowly kick them near the mouth for more control. Any zombie head will work.) Reward: Death Mask (Invincibility)
*At another shooting gallery, shoot the cultist and the bottles to receive a prize. Reward: Invisibility Cloak
*At the left of the second shooting gallery is another high fence. Use the Jump Boots to reach it. (Hint: If you can't use the Jump Boots, try to reach it from the upstairs window shelf, but this is very difficult). Reward: Drum of bullets
*In the freak show, blow up the bars on the third cell and destroy the hanging zombie. A secret panel will open up behind you. Reward: Guns akimbo
*In Jo-Jo's arena, behind the snake container, hit the warning sign to open up a secret door in the wall. Inside will be a secret, as well as a guest cameo. Reward: Box of flares x2, box of shells
*Inside the ticket booth is a stack of boxes against the wall. Hit the middle one to reveal the secret. Reward: Box of flares, doctor's bag
*Near the "Test Your Strength" game is a storage room filled with Cabal. One stack has a box with scratches on them. Hit the scratches to reveal a secret room. Reward: Life seed
*At the destroyed bridge near the end of the level, at the other end is a wall with a crack. Use some dynamite or the napalm launcher will open the way to the secret level. To reach it, you have to jump from pylon to pylon (the Jump Boots help here). Reward: Life seed, super armor
*In the first secret, there is an orange jumpsuit labeled "Kimble" on the wall. This is a reference to The Fugitive (although that character is Dr. John Kimball).
*This level is mostly based on the novel "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury. The story is about a carousel that makes people turn younger as they ride it. This refers to the large gargoyle carousel near the end of the level that holds the key to exit the carnival.
CALEB: I... Live... AGAIN!

Jump out of the grave and proceed to the left. Hit the door to the mausoleum. Two Axe Zombies emerge from their graves. Go down the hill to the front yard of the Morningside funeral home. A flare pistol sits in the middle of the yard. Kill the cultist in the graveyard and get the key. Open the door, beware of the two zombies waiting in the wings. Enter the parlor, kill the cultists in the area. From here you can either climb to the window and jump in or open the curtain to the organ and move right to the morgue. If you move right, proceed through the area, until you come to gray door on the right (the crematorium). Open it and kill the cultist for a key. In the corner you will find the place where the window is. Behind the drums is a Doctor's Bag. Exit this room and proceed back down the hall to the locked door. Enter the crypt and exit out the hole in the wall to the backyard (beware the cultists down below). Hit the button (a red-lined Tchernobog symbol) to end the level.
*After climbing out of the grave, hit the side of the coffin on the grave at your right. Reward: Box of flares
*In the area where you first wake up, there is a curved wall on the left corner (opposite the exit). Hit it to roll back the wall. Reward: Dynamite Bundles
*After emerging from the mausoleum and confronting the zombies, there is a hedge partition next to the exit. One part has different colored leaves. Hit that section to reveal an open grave. Reward: Body armor
*In front of the chapel there is a rectangular mausoleum with a secret on its roof. You can hop onto it, by jumping from the gravestones to the fence. Or you can break the window on the upper area of the funeral home and walk along the top of the fence from there. Reward: Guns akimbo
*In the funeral parlor, step on the middle bench. The bier will slide back, revealing a small alcove with rats and a reward. Reward: Box of flares
*Use the organ. An off-key tune will result and a panel of the wall in front will slide back. Reward: Beastvision
*On the right side of the wall with the wall coffins, there is one with a crack on the bottom row. Blow it up with dynamite to reveal the secret. Reward: Body armor
*In the crematorium, crawl into the furnace for a secret. Remember to crawl back quickly before you get too burned. Reward: Life Seed
*After the crematorium door is another wall coffin on the upper row with a crack in it. Blow it up to break the door open. Beward of the rats. Reward: Fire armor (it may be smart to get this before getting the above secret)
*In the crematorium, there is a table with a saw. Hit it to slide the shelf aside. Reward: Box of flares
*Near the end of the level, where a zombie emerges from a stone coffine, there is a secret behind the coffin's lid. Reward: Box of flares
*Super Secret: There is an invisible wall opposite the hole leading to the Funeral Home's back yard. You can detect it by throwing dynamite at the wall from head level. In one spot the dynamite will go "through the wall". To get to the secret, either jump from the edge of the hole (difficult), rocket jump using placed dynamite on the nearest pine box, jump on the cultist's heads, or, in co-op mode, jump on your partner's head. Caleb starts the level in the temple's basement, a water-logged cement foundation. He moves up, exploring each of the temple's wings for keys leading upwards. He eventually comes to a ritual altar, leading up to the temple's apex above the clouds. There he finally reaches the pillar at an oubliette, and finds access to the Altar of Stone.
*Near where you start is a bridge. Once you raise the bridge, jump to it and go left. Near the switch is a dark wall that is actually a secret panel. Reward: Doctor's Bag
*At the beginning, before you raise the bridge up, jump in the water. Swim forward and go under the stone platform (watch out for the <a href="Bone Eel">Bone Eels</a>). Swim near the bottom on the left side. There is a hole there. Reward: Cloak of Invisibility
*In the area with the Guns Akimbo on a pillar platform, and a stone face that spits fire at you, there is a small area with stone designs on the walls. On one side of the central section is a reddish design. Press it to reveal a niche. Reward: Box of shells
*In the area with the Fire Key, there is a circular rotunda inset in a wall. Go inside, go behind the rotational pillar, and look up. There is a button that can be shot. The rotunda will rotate, revealing the secret. You can leave by shooting the button again, or blowing up the cracked wall. Reward: Napalm Launcher, dynamite bundles, box of flares, life seed
*In the oubliette rotunda, before the end of the level, turn on the switch to make the wall rotate. Go in the space in-between the inner and outer walls (where the C-shaped middle wall is moving), and find a teleporter that takes you to a secret. Reward: Death Mask/Invincibility (also life seed and super armor in BloodBath)
*Super Secret - At the top of the temple, there is an open air veranda that you can see the clouds from (along with some zombies). Go to the middle opening and look down. There is a patch of clouds at a higher elevation than the others. Walk slowly off the edge and land on the clouds (try dropping near the left side if you have trouble). Follow the ledge to a door. The message "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU FOUND THIS. HERE, HAVE EVERYTHING." will display. Later, a teleporter will appear. Reward: Everything available in Shareware Blood (details to be filled in)
*There are rising stairs to the courtyard outside. Open the door. There is a different wall section with square tiling. Push it to reveal the secret. Reward: Cloak of Invisibility
*Super Secret - Walk up to the bridge near the end of the level, turn left, and look down. If you don't see anything, look again from where the end gate/Tchernobog symbol is. Jump against the wall and press the 'open' button. A wall panel should open up and you can slip inside (this may take several tries, so save your game).
Overview
Blood is a PC game developed by Monolith Productions and distributed by GT Interactive. It was released on the June 20, 1997, and became well-known for its copious amounts of gore and numerous stylistic and cultural references to literary and cinematic horror works. It was also the first Build engine game to feature voxels. The game falls in the first-person shooter category and has an arsenal of curious weapons, numerous enemies and liberal amounts of gore.

Like most games of it's time, the developers garnered attention for the game by releasing the first episode as shareware. The full retail version featured all four original episodes as well as expanded weapons, multiplayer mode, and bonus features like the music video for Type O Negative's "Love You to Death". The extreme violence in the game prompted the release of a version which removed all adult content.

Two different expansions, Cryptic Passage and Plasma Pak, were released shortly after the game was produced, although only Plasma Pak added new weapon modes and enemies. Later, a special edition collection titled One Unit: Whole Blood was released, which included the fully-patched full version of Blood, the Cryptic Passage expansion pak, the Plasma Pak expansion pak, and the Game Wizards interactive walkthrough/strategy guide. Blood II: The Chosen, Blood's sequel, was released in 1998.

After the source code of many game engines had been released by their respective owners, an intense fan campaign called for the release of Bloods source code (See: Blood Source Campaign.) This failed, but due to the cult-like fan support and lack of support from Blood's right holders, Blood has been the subject of many fan games, media, and recreations. The fan project Transfusion is attempting to recreate the Blood game on the Dark Places engine. Other games like Blood TC expand on the game's storyline.
Single-Player
As a first-person shooter, Blood is played through the perspective of the player-controlled character. Like Doom and Duke Nukem 3-D, the player must navigate through the maze-like levels of each episode (set of levels), seeking keys or activating switches to enable progress, looking for the goal that ends the level. The player does this for several levels until the "boss" level is reached and the player must defeat a large opponent to end the episode. While the player travels through the level, he/she must avoid or destroy the different enemies that attempt to kill the player.

Blood is organized in four episodes, with each episode containg a total of 8-9 different maps which consist of 6-7 regular levels, one "boss" level, and one secret level. Level design is varied, as some locations seem to lead into each other, but others jump out at the player. Some locations draw inspiration from cities in the era, with such locations as civil buildings, museums, pubs, shopping centers. Others are generic temples or mines.

Many levels are centered around a particular location, like a mortuary, a train station, a carnival, a sewer, a hospital or a lumber mill, and each is designed to include elements typical of these places (e.g. a crematorium in the mortuary, attractions at the carnival). These often have a Victorian or Edwardian architectural style, especially seen in the "haunted house" levels. Other areas are meant to resemble maze-like temples or generic catacombs, and some are completely original, such as E4M6: In The Flesh, which resembles a body, including walls which bleed when shot.

Blood was noted for its challenging, but realistic level design, as well as the abundance of enemies and weapons. Modern 3-D, fully-textured models require more computing power load, so the sprite-based gameplay of Blood allowed large numbers of enemies and objects on the screen at once. Also, due to the limited A.I., hostiles had to appear in large numbers to pose a significant challenge to the player.

The player's progress is further complicated by different types of traps, including crushing blocks, explosive barrels, lava pits, precarious cliff-sides, jumping puzzles, and combination lock doors. Blood was also one of the first FPS games (along with Marathon, Strife and Dark Forces) to feature alternate firing modes for each weapon. Most guns in Blood have two completely different methods of dealing damage, compared to earlier games in which each weapon had only a single type of firing mode.

The teleporter, a common trope in FPS games like Quake, is rarely used in Blood, which has a less high-tech motif and adds to the realism. Blood also contained secrets - areas that are difficult to access or find and often contain bonuses, but added the new concept of "Super Secrets" - areas are nearly impossible to find or reach, but which merit large rewards.

Graphic violence is one of the central features of Blood. Enemies can be blown to pieces, with streams of blood and chunks of flush raining down. Zombie heads can be shot off and then kicked around like soccer balls, spewing fountains of blood from the neck. If enemies are set on fire, they burst into flames and run around flailing their limbs. Innocents (non-combatants) appear in several levels and can be killed without compunction. Each of these instances comes accompanied with screams of terror and pain, making sound an integral part of the violent atmosphere. The levels are designed in the same spirit, with locations such as torture chambers, funeral homes, scientific laboratories, and hellish temples. Each location features walls splattered with blood, dismembered corpses, bodies in metal drums, and other grotesque situations.

In addition, Blood contains a large number of cultural references, particularly to horror movies and slasher films. Many elements are deliberately anachronistic, including weapons, pop culture, and other details. In particular, E2M4: The Overlooked Hotel, E4M4: Crystal Lake, and E4M9: Mall of the Dead are whole levels based on the movies "The Shining", "Friday the 13th", and "Dawn of the Dead". For a complete list, see References in Blood.

Multiplayer
Blood is essentially a single player game, but features the ability to battle other players across a computer connection. The two game modes are co-operative, which allows two players to play through a single player game, and Deathmatch (known in the game as 'BloodBath'. The goal of this mode is to kill the other players before the player himself is killed. Gameplay takes place on an specially designed level with power-up & weapon caches and strategic areas, or a single-player level. To end the level or match, a time limit or 'frag limit' had to be reached.

One of the unique features of Bloodbath was "The Voice", an audio commentator who announced an irreverent or trite phrase on each frag, humiliating the player. This added to the bloody style and competitive nature of the game, and punctuates the death of opponent's death. "The Voice" is credited to Jason Hall, who was CEO of Monolith Productions at the time of Blood's development. It should be noted that The Voice is indistinguishable from Tchernobog's voice.

Another feature was Humiliation. If the player had his/her health drained to exactly 0, he/she would be rendered immobile, but not dead. To an outside observer, the player would be kneeling. This would allow anyone to complete a humiliating death, such as jumping on the head, or death by pitchfork. The victim, however, had a chance to resurrect himself by repeatedly pressing the space bar.

Like most games in this era, Internet play was not well established. Therefore Blood options for connecting to other computers relied upon the standard modem, LAN, or serial cable connections. Modem and serial cable connections only allowed two player games, while an IPX network connection could support up to 8 players.

Technology
Main article Build engine

Blood is powered by the Build engine created by Ken Silverman for 3D Realms. The Build engine renders its world on a two-dimensional grid using closed 2D shapes called "sectors" and simple flat objects called "sprites" to populate the world geometry with objects. It is generally considered to be a 2.5D engine, since the basic world geometry is two-dimensional with an added height component, as each sector may have a different ceiling and floor height, and the ceiling and floor may be angled along one line of the sector. However the final result is that the world looks three-dimensional due to the way the engine renders it.

The version of the Build engine used in Blood makes use of voxels for smaller object like weapons, ammo, power-ups, and decorations, such as the tombstones in the first level of E1M1: Cradle to Grave.

Story
Blood takes place in 1928. The game documention does not specify a specific year, but the game's sequel Blood II: The Chosen takes place in 2028 and states that it has been 100 years since the events in Blood. Although the backstory was not delineated within the game itself, the Monolith website and a readme text document presented the few facts known about the precursory events, such as Caleb's relationship with Ophelia.

The game's hero (or anti-hero) is a man named Caleb (voiced by Stephan Weyte), a merciless gunfighter born in Texas who serves a cult called "The Cabal" that worships the dark god Tchernobog (voiced by Monolith CEO Jason Hall, who was credited simply as "The Voice"). Caleb joined the cult after meeting Ophelia Price, a woman whose homestead was burned down by the Cabal, killing her husband and baby son. She blamed her spouse for their deaths, because he wanted to rescind his membership. Half-crazy and rambling, Caleb nursed her back to health. It is implied that she later became Caleb's lover, and introduced him to the cult. Together they rose to the highest ranks and became "The Chosen", the four most esteemed generals of Tchernobog's army (the other two being Ishmael and Gabriel.

Caleb is a sarcastic man with a strong bent towards sadism, taking pleasure in killing almost anything, whether it impedes his quest or not. He has a prominent sense of humor, often making quips while taking the lives of others, or commenting cynically on surrounding events. Though when he comes to the Hall of Epiphany at the end of the game, he takes a more serious, determined tone.

The story starts in the Hall of the Epiphany, where Tchernobog sits on his throne, as chanting occurs in the backgorund. The four Chosen stand before him.

TCHERNOBOG: Welcome, my servants... my slaves.

A cultist shuffles into the room (some think he may be the Cabal Leader, as Tchernobog seems to speak through him). He pulls back his hood, revealing a face devoid of eyes, sharp teeth, and an ugly, gnarled face.

CALEB: What is thy bidding, my master?

The cultist stretches up, as if by an unknown force. His eyes glow white, his jaw drops, and he grunts and groans, as if choking.

TCHERNOBOG: You have failed me. I disavow you all.

The other Chosen react incredulously.

CALEB: What th'?
OPHELIA: What?

The cultist smiles sadistically, right before his flesh quickly decomposes and melts off his skeleton. Caleb looks right and sees Shial descend upon Gabriel and carry him up into the darkness. To his left, Ishmael has burst into flames and collapses as Cerberus and a Hell Hound approach.

OPHELIA: What's happening?

Ophelia looks around, too stunned to move. Cheogh flies in from behind and grabs her. Caleb jumps for her, but it is too late, and he all he can do is watch Cheogh's glowing white eyes fade into the blackness.

TCHERNOBOG: I have taken your love. Now I will take your life.

Caleb looks around as darkness descends upon him. He begins falling into the void.

TCHERNOBOG: Consider my power... in a hollow grave.

Episode 1: The Way of All Flesh
B1E1
Caleb rises from his grave in a tomb located in a graveyard of the "Morningside Mortuary" funeral home with the words: "I live... again" (E1M1: Cradle to Grave). He begins by searching for his love Ophelia, taken by the gargoyle Cheogh. Unfortunately, Tchernobog's followers are everywhere. Caleb moves to the train station behind the cemetary (E1M2: Wrong Side of the Tracks) and boards the "Phantom Express" (E1M3: Phantom Express). He kills all the Cabal on the train and releases the safety locks on the boiler, exploding the engine and derails the train. He emerges from the wreckage and finds he has arrived at a carnival (E1M4: Dark Carnival) with several Cabal-controlled attractions. Caleb finds a broken bridge and a pond. If he crosses the bridge, he finds a side path to a new ride under construction (E1M8: House of Horrors). Either way, an underwater cavern leads him to one of the Cabal strongholds, a deconsecrated cathedral, where the droning chant in the Cabal's language echoes throughout the grounds (E1M5: Hallowed Grounds). Cutting through swarms of Cabal loyalists and other creatures, Caleb gains entrance to The Great Temple (E1M6: The Great Temple), a place protected by numerous underwater tunnels, traps, and Cabal minions. Caleb finds a teleporter that leads him to a rotunda, that leads to Cheogh's lair (E1M7: Altar of Stone). Caleb finds Ophelia at the top of the altar, crucified on a slab. He screams in anguish, when the temple begins to rumble, and a wall collapses. Cheogh emerges and Caleb slays him. He takes Ophelia down and places her on funeral pyre to cremate her body. After, he approaches the body of Cheogh, points his shotgun at the creature's head, and pulls the trigger one last time.
In a fierce battle, Caleb destroys the dark god and its body disappears in a flash of light. A man (either a Cabal prisoner, Cabalist, monk, or civilian) approaches, praising him and spouting the Lord's prayer. Nonchalantly, Caleb blasts him in the chest with the Tommy Gun and leaves the Hall.
Since it was not created by the original creators, there were no modifications to the existing gameplay, just the inclusion of a new single-player episode. However, the single-player included larger maps and a small storyline.
*Plasma Pak - This expansion pak was released in 1997, and was developed by Monolith Productions. It contains several modifications, including new enemies, new weapons modes, new BloodBath maps, and a new single-player episode. Due to the high fan demand and low quality of subsequent Blood projects, many fan games and projects and sprung up. The goal of most of these is to replicate or expand on the original Blood experience. This also includes a large collection of fan art and fan fiction.

Development
QStudios, under Apogee, started development of Blood under the title "Horror3D". It later sold the rights to Monolith Productions.

Blood start with Blood Alpha, a beta demo which contains several differences from the released game, including Caleb as a robed cultist.

The shareware version also contained several differences, such as delerium mushrooms and the ability to view yourself in 3rd person.

Bloodlust
While under QStudios, one of the undeveloped features of Blood was that of Bloodlust. With each enemy killed, a Bloodlust meter would increase, until it reached capacity. At that point, he would transform into the Beast, with increased strength and speed, but less choice in weaponry. In order to maintain this mode, the player would have to continue killing, or risk reverting to human form. Although this feature was not included in the final version, the central plotline still centralizes around this idea, as Tchernobog declares his reason for condemning Caleb was that he would return with the power of all the lives he took.

Another dropped feature was the ability to play as the other Chosen, which was included in the sequel. Likely, each player would have transformed into a different creature, which likely became Tchernobog's lieutenants.

Release and Critical Reception
Blood received a metascore of 87 from MobyGames. It's highest rating (100) was given by The Adrenaline Vault while its lowest (80) came from GameSpot.

A voxel is a volume element which represents a value on a three-dimensional grid. In layman's terms, it is a three dimensional pixel. Voxels are frequently used in physical and medical data.

Voxel-based images are frequently used in Blood. Most weapons and power-ups are rendered using voxels, as opposed to sprites, which are two-dimensional images. Many other Build engine games, such as Shadow Warrior used voxels.

This article is a guide to installing the Blood games on various systems.

Using DosBox

Although Blood is a DOS application, it can be run on Unix based systems using DosBox. These guides show how to install DosBox on Unix systems and then how to use Blood inside it.

Compiling DosBox with GCC (Distribution independent)

Installing DosBox on Fedora Linux

Fedora uses the RPM package management system and maintains its own YUM repository. DosBox can easily be installed from either a YUM front-end or from a terminal. As front ends vary we will show you how to do it from a terminal. Unless you already are in Root you will need to give the terminal Root privileges. Do this by typing: "su" and then when it computes that, type in your Root password. After that installation is simple, just type "yum install dosbox" and follow the instructions (such as saying yes to the install of dependencies). After that a DosBox icon should appear in your Fedora menu. You can also launch DosBox by typing "dosbox" in the terminal.

Using DosBox with Blood on Unix Systems

The easiest way to open Blood (Using the GNOME Desktop Environment) is to right click on the Blood Executable, Click Open with Other application, Click Use a custom command, and type dosbox into the Command box. Blood should load, and it will remember that you use DosBox for this program (There can be complications between WINE and DosBox however).

Cerberus: my contribution

"Wow, nice going on the wiki!" - RedFanatic, Modder

"It's good to be around people I can relate to. I will try to send all the support I can for this young wiki." - Mark Anthony Schaller, Wiki Contributor.

Cerberus's Messege
The Blood Wiki's first year has been quite the year for changes. We have grown to have

"1,135 total pages in the database. This includes "talk" pages, pages about Blood, minimal
"stub" pages, redirects, and others that probably don't qualify as content pages.

With regards to the Shogo Sub-Section, I would like to thank Hlingler and Thetargos from the Fedora Forum for helping me set up the game and for Thetargos's minor contribution to the Shogo Guides article.

Thanks to everyone who has made a contribution or has said an encouraging word.

And a final thanks to all those who are reading the Blood Wiki and its contents!
Fanatics are the second most common kind of Cabal member. They act similar to Cultists, but use Tommy Guns instead of shotguns. They have the same strength as a Cultist, but their weapon combined with their accuracy and numbers makes them a bigger threat, especially at long range.

Blood
Fanatics wear a black/gray robe with a blue belt. They behave just like Cultists, but their weapon gives them a greater advantage, due to its repeated fire, accuracy, and effectiveness at long range. They also appear in slightly fewer numbers.

Blood II: The Chosen
Like the previous game, Fanatics are an upgraded version of the cultist, but have a different model. They are the special forces of the Cabal - better equipped, more experienced, and more deadly. They are faster than Cultists, and wield rapid fire weapons like the submachine gun or assault rifle. In addition, the Fanatic has a suicide attack. If it is drained of life without being gibbed, it will collapse on its knees, scream while it injects itself with a stimulant pack, then run at you. When it's close enough, it will detonate an explosive pack, taking himself and you out.
Zealots are two different enemies between Blood and Blood II, but in either game they are advanced fighters.

Blood
Zealots appear only in the Plasma Pak and are also known as Elite Cultists (despite the fact they have the same HP as Ackolytes). These are some of the most deadly of the robed enemies, since their weapon of choice is the Tesla Cannon. In addition, they are resistant to electrical attacks, meaning the same weapon won't work on them. The instruction manual says they have been through "special training to make them very mean".

Blood II
Zealots appear unrelated to their Blood counterparts in this game, but are intelligent and well-trained. Only a choice few members undergo the transformation, and fewer surivive with their sanity intact. They are the only members of the Cabal with any skill in the dark arts, making them an invaluable resource. They usually accompany lesser members, and are smart enough to coordinate an attack with other units. Other Cabal members tend to fear them due to their cold inhuman personality.

Zealots have no apparent armor, but wear a green raincoat, stained with blood at the sleeves, and pants. They wear no shirt, which reveals their body's rib cage and organs. This may indicate they have no skin.

No one knows why they cover their faces. Many claim they no longer need normal senses. Others say that it is so they don't have to be forced to look upon the faces of other, lesser, Cabal members, maybe it is simply an intimidation tactic. The most likely answer is that what they saw during their transformation ritual so taints them, they fear looking upon the world with natural eyes. --From the Blood II Instruction Manual

Zealots have the ability to shoot fireballs, release shockwaves of energy, teleport, heal, and project a shield. In later levels, Zealots are more common, and appear in twos and threes.
The Gill Beast is a Blood enemy that primarily lives in the water. They have muscular fleshy bodies, flippered hands, and giant heads that are little more than a mouth with needle-sharp teeth. Their speed makes them particularly dangerous, especially since they often travel with Bone Eels or other Gill Beasts and can surround you, blocking your path and making you drown. If you plunge into the water and hear the roar of the Gill Beast, get out as soon as you can. They have no long range attacks, but can move twice as fast as you can in the water.

Gill Beasts can live out of the water, but without their natural element, they are slow and ponderous. A good tactic is to draw them onto the land where they are less of a threat.

The Gill Beasts have no known origins. They may be evolutions of the Bone Eel, servants of Tchernobog, or unrelated creatures. One room shows Gill Beasts in a cage alongside other humans, indicating they are either the subject or result of an experiment.
Bloated Butchers, Puke Zombies or Fat Zombies are an enemy from Blood. They are considered a tougher form of Axe Zombie.

Bloated Butchers are tall, obese forms of the undead, and wear a stained undershirt and pants. Their appearance was inspired by Uncle Frank from Night of the Living Dead '90.They wield meat cleavers which can be used at close range or thrown (which causes Spirit damage), and also attack from long range by vomiting corrosive green gobs of puke at the player. They are slower than Axe Zombies but can take much more damage. However, they do not return after collapsing and cannot be decapitated.
Ackolytes only appear in Blood Plasma Pak. They wear green robes with a yellow belt. They only attack by repeatedly throwing TNT bundles. The Blood instruction manual describes them as "cultists-in-training", meaning they lowest in the ranks, and are not yet trained in firearms or advanced weaponry. However, they are stronger than either Cultists or Fanatics.

The Spiders are arachnid enemies that appear only in Blood. They can be considered nuisance enemies and attack in swarms. They are difficult to defeat due to their numbers, disorienting poison, and lowness to the ground.

Red Spiders
Red spiders appear in cracks in the wall and in ceilings. The attack by biting which has a chance of infecting the player with delerium-causing poison. This represented by twisting, tilting, and contorting the screen, making movement and aiming difficult. The effect is temporary, but multiple bites have cumulative effects. While not threatening on their own, they can cause great risk if attacking and intoxicating the player while facing larger enemies like Cabal.

Green Spiders
Green spiders are larger and tougher. They behave the same way, but their poison causes dimness of vision. Like red spider poison, the effect is temporary, but multiple spider bites could cause a player to go totally blind.

Mother Spiders
Mother spiders are very large gray spiders which are not capable of attacks on their own. Instead, they repeatedly spawn red and green spiders which attack the player. Most weapons are capable of defeating a mother spider, but the Tesla Cannon has the added effect of stunning the enemy, Tommy guns can take out the spawning spiders, and explosives can launch the mother spider into orbit.

It should be noted that while Mother Spiders are counted in the total number of monsters for the level, their offspring is not. This means players can artificially inflate their total kill count for the level by letting spiders spawn. This means a player can kill more enemies than the level total.

Note: Getting an accurate HP count is difficult because of the constant spawning of spiders.

Shial
Main Article: Shial

Shial is the mother of all spiders, faithful servant to Tchernobog. She is responsible for the kidnapping of Gabriel and makes her lair in the bowels of the earth in the arctic circle.

They resemble lesser relatives of Cerberus, who may or may not be their leader. They can breathe fire, setting the player alight and draining his health, and have powerful jaws they bite with. If lured into water, their offensive capabilities diminish sharply.
